Boryeong Coal Museum

Today the kids and I went to the Boryeong Coal Museum. It was about a 2 hr drive from the Pyeongtaek area. We actually took a left turn too early, and ended up going rail biking (first). After we rail biked, we got back out to the main road and found the museum.

The entrance fees are cheap: ₩1,500 (like $1.25) for adults and  ₩500 ($0.50) for kids 6-12. Kids 5 and under are free. The museum, like most places in Korea, is closed on Mondays. Hours are 9-6pm March thru October and 9-5pm November  thru February.

The main floor has a large diorama of a coal mine, examples of coal, items worn by coal mine workers and a video (in Korean) about coal mining.

.

Upstairs, there are books on mining life  (or I think that's what they're about), life-size displays about mining life and fossils in coal that you can look at. There is also another video (in Korean) explaining about some of the books on display.

Be sure to ride the elevator down. It simulates riding down the coal mine shaft. It caught all of us off guard, even the Koreans riding with us. I guess none of us read the sign explaining that it. We just though we were riding an ordinary elevator down to the main floor. Nope. It takes you to the basement.

This is were you get to feel as if you're really in a coal mine. The life-size displays are neat.

Upon exiting the "coal mine," you walk up a long corridor to another elevator.

This one simulates the ride up to the surface. I read the sign before entering this time.

After exiting the museum, there are static displays you can look at with various mining carts/machines/tools.

If you are out near Boryeong, like if you go to the yearly mud festival, I would suggest making the easy side trip out the the Boryeong Coal Museum. It's small enough to get through in less than an hr, even with taking your time. With my kids, we were through the entire museum in 30 minutes, though I would have liked to look at some things longer, but with 3 kids 8-3 and my hubby MIA (working), some things get a quick 2 second glance before hurrying to catch up to Little Man.
